Grade-school irreverence abounds in this compendium of (extremely brief) fractured fairy tales, which might well be subtitled "All Things Gross and Giddy." With a relentless application of the sarcasm that tickled readers of The True Story of the Three Little Pigs , Scieszka and Smith skewer a host of juvenile favorites: Little Red Running Shorts beats the wolf to grandmother's house; the Really Ugly Duckling matures into a Really Ugly Duck; Cinderumpelstiltskin is "a girl who really blew it." Text and art work together for maximum comic impact--varying styles and sizes of type add to the illustrations' chaos, as when Chicken Licken discovers that the Table of Contents, and not the sky, is falling. Smith's art, in fact, expands upon his previous waggery to include increased interplay between characters, and even more of his intricate detail work. The collaborators' hijinks are evident in every aspect of the book, from endpapers to copyright notice. However, the zaniness and deadpan delivery that have distinguished their previous work may strike some as overdone here. This book's tone is often frenzied; its rather specialized humor, delivered with the rapid-fire pacing of a string of one-liners, at times seems almost mean-spirited. Ages 5-up. This is a very funny book. Also, it's got some of the best use of design and illustration that I've seen, ever!These are classic fairy tales with a spin. Some have me literally laughing out loud.And it's a beautifully designed book, where everything works in sync to make the stories their most effective.
I bought this book, along with The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, for my daughters when they were first released decades ago. As I recall, both books were read until they completely wore out. Now I have a crazy, funny, wild 8 yr old grandson who loves fart jokes but otherwise is developing a great sense of humor. He’s been pretty resistant to reading but absolutely loves these books. The reading level challenges him but he’s motivated to master the individual stories because they’re tied together with funny comments by “The Narrator.†He studies and analyzes the illustrations. His older sister rolls her eyes (she’s one of those superior chapter-book-a-day readers) but secretly enjoys these two books almost as much as her brother. I highly recommend this book for all kids...probably between the ages of 5 and 10 or 11.
I'm currently 21 years old when I decided to buy this book. I remember having this read to me when I was in elementary school by one of my teachers for the first time ever. It's quite a different book than what I was used to, but I really liked it and also ended up reading it for myself. That was the only time I had saw and read the book in my life until I seen a picture of it being shared all over on Facebook, recently. So of course I decided to buy it here on Amazon. I just got in the mail and because I'm also sick at the moment, it was an enjoyable book (again) to read in bed. ^_^ Now I cannot wait to read this to my future children!
my children who are now 21 and 19 had this book in the paperback edition as children, it was one of there favorites. The Stinky Cheese Man is such a fun, silly tale and their favorite from all the stories in the book. I still have their original copy stored away and that's where it will stay for a treasured memory. I purchased this copy to pass on to my new/first grandchild, Easton Ray will grow up with a love for The Stinky Cheese Man! He's only 3 1/2 months old but, already smiles when he hears "run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the stinky cheese man". Just a wonderful book for children and I think some of the adults will love it too. Award winner for a reason!
I remember reading this in Elementary school, a lot of fun to read with friends, classmates, or just by yourself. This book is more of a PARAODY of classic fairy tales, like the ginger bread man, Jack and the Bean Stock, The ugly Duckling, The Tortoise and the Hare, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Chicken Little, and others. A Great read for Older kids who are tired of the Disney stories read to them over and over again.
My children often request this book because it says "stupid" int he title which is a word I do not allow them to say in the house. I don't know why I purchased the book but I guess I heard about it before and wanted to see what all the noise was about. It's okay. A little confusing if you like to read stories out of order since the book is sort of an interlocking story altogether. Whatever gets them excited about stories!
This book is hilarious and children love it. It is a bunch of mixed up fairy tales that are goofy and wonderful. I use it in my 2nd--3rd grade drama classes and we make plays out of the hilarious tales. Highly recommended by this experienced teacher. Parents, drama teachers, Grade 1-3 teachers--it gets belly laughs all the time and the stories are simple enough to act out while kids put their own spin on the tales...wonderful book!
Vaguely remembered The Stinky Cheese Man being a story, so I looked it up and bought it. It appeals to my slightly warped sense of humor, while at the same time giving my daughters an interesting (but appropriate) spin on classic fairly tales.
Need a good laugh and a classic spin on some well-known tales? This book will suffice. Kids everywhere get a kick out of it - and adults too, in my experience! And it's great for reading aloud if you need some short and amusing.
